Welcome to Reception where your child's journey begins
There are two Reception Classes, the Ladybirds and the Bees. We have an broad, active and fun curriculum which addresses the children‘s social, emotional, physical, intellectual, moral and cultural development within a safe, secure, stimulating environment.
Our bespoke curriculum is designed for long-term retention of knowledge, building small blocks of knowledge across a broad range of subjects towards the goal of academic excellence. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, filling the full school day with powerful learning opportunities.
In Early Years, the curriculum is built around the 7 areas of the framework: Communication & Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Art and Design.
All 7 areas are taught through many different modes of learning and all build towards and beyond the Early Learning Goals set within the framework. Phonics is taught through the Read, Write Inc scheme of work. Phonics lessons begin from the very start of Reception and all children are taught in groups or individually with the goal that all bar the very few will be able to read and write simple sentences by the end of the year.
We believe that play, both indoors and outdoors, is the fundamental way in which young children learn. In our continuous provision we have several areas that are always available:
Dramatic Adventures: A well-equipped role-play area sparks imaginative stories. It might transform into a bustling supermarket, a cosy home, or a spaceship blasting off to new galaxies.
Building Big Ideas: The large block area inside and the large construction area outside invites them to become architects and engineers. They'll experiment with balance, create towering structures, and collaborate with friends to build elaborate cities.
Literacy Launchpad: Cosy reading corners filled with captivating books nurture a love for language. Children can snuggle up with a friend or explore stories independently, fostering early literacy skills.
A World of Creation: We provide a rich selection of open-ended resources to ignite young minds: paint in all colours of the rainbow, crayons for bold strokes, collage materials with endless textures, and sculpting tools for building 3D masterpieces. Natural elements like leaves, pinecones, and feathers add an extra touch of wonder.
Beyond the Walls: Our outdoor space extends the learning possibilities. Permanent fixtures like water play, sand pits, a climbing frame boat, mud kitchens and a digging area provide endless opportunities for sensory exploration, messy play, and scientific discovery. Children can be little pirates navigating a sea of water, palaeontologists digging for dinosaur bones in the sand, or master chefs concocting mud pies in their outdoor kitchens.
