Battle and Langton Art and Design Curriculum
We have followed the AccessArt curriculum since September 2022 and have seen the quality of learning within Art and Design improve dramatically. Our curriculum favours open-ended, creative learning opportunities that take children on a rich creative journey. Progressive skills and knowledge are taught throughout the curriculum and they are embedded in rich artistic experiences that are naturally inclusive.
There are 4 interrelated areas of the curriculum:
Drawing and Sketchbooks: Drawing and sketching underpins the whole curriculum. Children are encouraged to develop their use of a sketchbook from an early point, to develop and record ideas, to refine techniques and to spark ideas. Drawing skills and techniques are learnt progressively throughout the curriculum, from early exploration of mark making using big gestural movements, to the fine details of drawing maps and tonal shading.
Surface and Colour: This area covers a wide range of media, materials and techniques: Painting, pastels, collage, printing and mixed media pieces are studied and learnt progressively throughout the curriculum.
Working in 3D: This area covers sculpture in a variety of forms. It builds skills, knowledge and techniques in construction, model building and mixed media sculpture to give rich creative experiences
Work of artists: Throughout all units in our curriculum there is a focus on the work of a wide variety of artists; some internationally famous, some not, but all experts in their field. By studying the artists the children are able to see a wide variety of artistic work and be inspired by the potential pathways to becoming an artist.
Connected Learning Concepts:
Similarity and Difference: We want children to be able to analyse different techniques and materials to determine how to achieve certain effects.
Evaluation and Improvement: Critique in art is a crucial part of the process and we want children to understand how to give and receive feedback in a constructive way in order to become better learners.
